Jedi Knight or Jedi Guardian? Empty Jedi Knight or Jedi Guardian?

Post  Jacan Na'al Sun Dec 13, 2009 4:18 am

Now that all the classes are revealed and we find ourselves with four force user classes what do you think of the name Jedi Knight?

When we thought there was only going to be one force user class for each faction the title Jedi Knight seemed to fit well as it describes ALL Jedi appropriately.

Now we have Jedi Knight and Jedi Consular, where Jedi Knight is a broad and generic title whereas Jedi Consular defines a specific path or specialisation within the Jedi way.

A note: Four Jedi founded the Jedi Temple or Coruscant, two are called Sage Masters and two are called Warrior Masters, this supports there being a distinction between the two Jedi types.

When a Jedi Consular achieves the rank of Jedi Master (previously being called a Jedi Knight) then he is known as a Sage Master.

Also, when a Jedi Guardian achieves the rank of Jedi Master (also previously being called a Jedi Knight) then he is known as a Warrior Master.

Here lies my conundrum, because the partner of the Jedi Consular is not called a Jedi Guardian to fit this mold of Sage and Warrior paths, it is called Jedi Knight.

So, I think that the Jedi Knight should be renamed to Jedi Guardian.

I also think it is possible that BioWare have intended this all along but did not want to reveal the fact that they had four force classes intended at the time they announced the Jedi Knight, thus used the generic Jedi title.

What do YOU think?

If that was the case they would have already announced the name change.

I think they used Jedi Knight because of pressure from Lucas Arts. Jedi Guardian is a Bioware creation and Jedi Knight as a canonical known aspect from Lucas Arts and the movies. I would say they wanted that connection.

I think its stupid and it doesn't make any sense. In the first two KOTOR games they were called jedi guardians and in numerous books jedi such as Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan have been identified as guardians so what the hell. Anakins a guardian, mara jade is a guardian, jaina solo, jacen solo, the list of major characters goes on and on.
Since the books and movies are considered canon i see no reason why it shouldn't be considered canon to call them guardians and besides, this game takes place in a completely unexplored part of star wars history.
Furthermore, the term was officially canonized in the officially licensed star wars books, The New Essential Chronology and the Essential Guide to the Force. The most famous guardians are Mace Windu, Anakin Skywalker, Qui-Gon Jinn, Plo Koon, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

But there is canon and there's canon.

Lucas Arts have stated numerous times that movie canon eclipses all other sources. Its my feeling they just wanted the iconic Jedi Knight featured.

Actually the Guardian was created for the SW tabletop RPG, BioWare simply took the Guardian and Consular and created the Sentinel for in between, the Sentinel was then later added to the Tabletop RPG as well.

What your saying makes perfect sense but in my opinion i would like bioware to stick with the way they had the first game, with jedi guardians. But hey, its just a name, not a really big deal.@ Jacan, that is true but it wasn't made canon till it was put in those two books and famous jedi were listed as guardians and consulers. PS Is something wrong with my forum settings whenever i try to make a paragraph or split one in two it gets all grouped together when i post it.

Post  Bahn Durm Sun Dec 13, 2009 5:23 am

That is a very great point, Jacan. I mean, Knight is what was encompassed as a LEVEL in the Jedi Order, but not a type of Jedi. There is a difference.
"Confer on you the level of Jedi Knight, the Council does." - Yoda
Therefore, since there are two classes of Jedi there should be the Guardian and the Sentinel. They are classes of Jedi, but not ranks in the Order. Even if it is Canon in the movies, it still based on the titles of the Jedi, not their classes of style.

Whether or not BioWare changes it is a different thing. They'll probably just think that it's okay to get away with, but there will be ticked off players (such as yours truly) who will be Consulars but want to reach the Level of Jedi Knight. It's just very stupid, in my opinion. The fans will all want to be called Knight, despite their class decision; LucasArts going against what will make the fans happy will be most damaging to the idea that they do care about what we, the consumer, think.

Ditto. And who knows, maybe this leaves space open for them to introduce more classes in the future that follow this scheme. They could also still redefine them at any juncture such as an expansion and/or major patch. Personally I feel they should have made a generic "force sensitive" class with specific branches that one could spec into as they progress (ex. the Warrior/Sage scheme).

I think that would make more sense if there was just one force sensitive class. It kind of looks weird right now with jedi Knight and just consuler there randomly. Should be Jedi, smuggler, trooper, and spy. similar to star wars galaxies that i believe if not for the NGE(new game enhancements) the ruined it would still be extremely popular today.
Of course it could all be some conspiracy engineered by lucas arts to make room for SWTOR. lol

Well they said that they were having 2 sub classes for all the classes so maybe it well be Jedi knight sub class guardian/sentinel.

That could fit well actually.

Jedi Knight = Tank and DPS
Jedi Con = Healer and CC

Only time will tell once we get to see the skill trees.

Just what I was thinking when I read Jacen's post, they'll maybe use Jedi Guardian as a sub-class along with Sentinel, then people can still have the familiar title "Jedi Knight" To make them believe they're Luke Skywalker from the movies or something...

Just have to remember though in a few of their interviews they DID say they are breaking away slightly from how the Trinity works in MMO's, so I don't know what they're trying to do with the sub-classes right now.

I'm voting against the name Jedi Guardian...

I am unsure how I feel of such a name change. While I like the sound of "Jedi Guardian," it makes me feel as though the name implies that such a title is someone who "Guards a Jedi." On the other hand, I can also see how it makes more sense in that a Jedi is in a manner of speaking, a Guardian of the Force. So, alas, I am torn and have voted "no opinion."

Great post though, I look forward to reading more opinions on this matter.

Well I voted a big yes for the Guardian.

All why's have been said already so I make this a short one.

If im correct:

- Apprentise
- Padawan
- Knight
- Master

Maybe i'm forgetting the younglings but who cares....

So we had a padawan trainig to become a jedi knight but at the same time he is learning
the way of the consular.... So he is a jediknight Consular after a while.
That would be the firts Dual-class in TOR!
Maybe we will shorten the jedi knight consular to sentinel one day..... (or has this been done?)

I know im typing the same as most but I wanted to give my own ring to it!

I think they should re name.

main reason is i would love there to be a development chain available for us that basically if you select a jedi you start off as a padawan and you have to get to a level to obtain the rank night and the same with sith adepts.

They could then insert a sequence of you going before someone to recieve your title etc.

this would give people added incentive to level as certain skill trees could be locked off until you reach the rank of knoigh etc etc.

just my opinion.

I prefer Guardian myself. I also like the Idea of achieving the level of Knighthood. Perhaps even before the council.

Already both classes are to the lvl of knighthood. Unlike KOLTOR of old we are starting at that level otherwise a Padawan would not be assigned to us as the new game has provision for.

Post  Beadle Sun Apr 25, 2010 8:55 pm

I like it the way it is. Jedi knight is the iconic name that most people associate with Luke Skywalker. This will make it simpler to the masses - I want to be Luke Skywalker(or at least how he was in the movies) = Jedi Knight - also, alot of people playing the game probably haven't read the canon and possibly haven't played the KOTOR games so wouldn't know what you were talking about (I know I didn't play them until I joined OUF Very Happy Still haven't gotten around to the second one.) So I say leave it as is.

I agree with what beadle said, I'm also pretty sure that Bioware has a WHOLE team of people who've thought the names over too.
Considering we know so little about the game for all we know Jedi Guardian could be some sort of sub-path or one of the two skill trees you can choose.

Edit: What Jalen says makes sense too actually

iguess we all have to wait to see what the skill trees hold as they could have trees which will lead you to gain an additinal ttle once the tree is mastered??? just a thought

Yes, Bioware has already commented on a Padawan companion. I'm not sure of the link though. Check with our "Grand Master" he may know.
